Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Moderately large, usually rhizomatous perennials.

Stems: Culms hollow, erect.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades flat to involute, nonauriculate. Margins entire. Sheaths open to base; ligule relatively large, often puberulent. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescence an open to contracted or spike-like panicle; spikelets 1(2)–flowered, rachilla prolonged behind palea as a slender, pubescent bristle, disarticulating above glumes; glumes subequal, longer than floret, acute to acuminate, somewhat keeled, first glume 1–nerved, second glume usually 3–nerved; lemmas 5–nerved, the lateral nerves often extending into 4 small teeth, callus bearded, the hairs very short to sometimes as long as lemmas, awns dorsal, slender or geniculate; palea usually slightly shorter than lemma. Ovary superior.

Fruit: Caryopsis ovoid to ellipsoid; somewhat ventrally compressed to sulcate; short–beaked.
